ESOS online — managing the scheme with software and platforms
Most of ESOS can now run online: metered energy data flows into a platform, the 95% coverage position calculates itself, and the notification files through the Environment Agency’s MESOS service. Two things still can’t be digitised — site visits and the lead assessor’s sign-off. Here is how the digital route works, and which platforms are worth shortlisting.
What managing ESOS online actually looks like

The energy audit itself still needs a sampling plan and site visits where consumption justifies them, and the finished assessment must be reviewed by a registered lead assessor — the two stages the regulations keep human.
The filing endpoint is official and free: MESOS — Manage your ESOS reporting 2 on GOV.UK, where the responsible undertaking submits the compliance notification by 5 December 2027. Everything upstream of that submission is where platform choice matters.
The case for a platform: ESOS is not the only output

When a spreadsheet is still enough
Software is a means, not a compliance requirement — the regulations are indifferent to your tooling.
A single-site organisation with a handful of meters, no SECR obligation and stable consumption can run a perfectly compliant ESOS assessment from spreadsheets — many did in Phase 3. The scheme requires the calculation, the audit, the sign-off and the notification; it does not require a platform.
The tipping points are multi-site estates, transport-heavy consumption profiles, annual SECR reporting on the same data, or a Phase 3 evidence pack that took weeks to reconstruct. Can ESOS be managed entirely online?
Almost — but not quite.
Energy data collection, consumption analysis, evidence-pack assembly and the compliance notification (via the Environment Agency's online MESOS service) can all run through software.
Two things cannot be digitised away: site visits where the audit sampling plan requires them, and the review and sign-off by a registered lead assessor, which is a named human role in the regulations.
What does ESOS software actually do?
The useful core is energy data management: pulling consumption from half-hourly meter feeds, bills, fuel cards and building systems into one audited dataset; calculating the total energy figure and the 95% coverage position; flagging significant energy uses for the audit plan; and generating the evidence pack.
The stronger platforms then reuse the same dataset for SECR's annual disclosure and UK SRS S2 emissions figures, which is where the real return on the tooling sits.

Is there an official ESOS online portal?
Yes — MESOS ('Manage your ESOS reporting'), the Environment Agency's online notification service on GOV.UK.
It is where the responsible undertaking registers and submits the compliance notification by the phase deadline.
MESOS is the filing endpoint, not a management tool: everything before the submission — data, audits, sign-off — happens in your own systems.
Does using ESOS software remove the need for a lead assessor?
No.
However complete the digital dataset, the assessment must still be reviewed and signed off by a lead assessor on an approved register (unless total consumption is under 40,000 kWh, or certified ISO 50001 coverage applies).
Software compresses the assessor's job — clean data shortens the review — but cannot replace it.
