Double materiality software: what the tool must do
Double materiality software assesses each sustainability matter twice — for its impact on people and the environment, and for its financial effect on the company — and keeps the evidence behind each decision.
This page sets out the features the revised ESRS make necessary, and quotes 6 platforms whose own sites describe materiality.
First question
Do you need double materiality, or single?
Double materiality is the ESRS method; UK SRS uses single (financial) materiality under ¶¶17–18 of UK SRS S1.
So a UK listed company reporting only against UK SRS does not need the impact half of a double materiality tool.
A group in CSRD scope needs both views of the same topics, and the checker beside this says which your software must run.
Which materiality must your software run?
Is the company, or a group it belongs to, in scope of the CSRD and the ESRS?
Will it report against UK SRS (listed, comply or explain, or by choice)?
Single (financial) materiality: what could reasonably be expected to affect prospects. Impact scoring is optional, not required.
Settle scope first: the CSRD and UK SRS pages on this site set out who is in.

The features
What must double materiality software actually do?
The software has to implement the method in revised ESRS 1 Chapter 3 and produce what ESRS 2 IRO-1 asks the statement to say, in Delegated Regulation (EU) 2026/1563.
The commonest failure is averaging: any one of scale, scope and irremediable character can make a negative impact severe, under AR 22, so a tool that averages them under-reports.
The second is the matrix: the revised ESRS neither require nor mention one, so a tool that only draws a chart has skipped the register and the reasoning.

Versions
Which version of the ESRS must the software follow?
- 202301
- 3 July 202602
- FY202603
A version choice
2023 ESRS as amended, with named reliefs, or revised ESRS; the choice stated. - FY202704
- 1 July 202705
EFRAG’s IG 1 is a useful description of the process but non-authoritative and written for the 2023 ESRS, so ask how a tool maps its method to the revised paragraphs.
Assurance
What will the assurance provider read in the software?
Under Article 34(1)(aa) of the Accounting Directive, the limited assurance opinion covers the process the company carried out to identify the information reported.
That makes the audit trail the product: every score, threshold and change since last year, with who decided and on what evidence.
Read about suppliers asked for data
A supplier with an average of 1,000 employees or fewer may decline information beyond the capped datapoints of the voluntary standard when a CSRD customer asks; the Commission says the cap imposes no obligation on the value chain (6 May 2026).
In the demo
What should a double materiality platform show you in a demo?
Give the platform one awkward impact and watch what it does with it.
Each question beside this comes from a paragraph of the revised ESRS or the Accounting Directive, with what a passing answer looks like.

Platforms
Which platforms describe double materiality on their own sites?
From this site’s registry, read 11 October 2026 and 30 September–1 October 2026: each platform whose own pages mention materiality, alphabetically and in its own words. 62 platforms in the registry make a CSRD claim.
The full CSRD list is on CSRD reporting software.
Order of work
What should you do first?
- 1
Fix the lens
Double for ESRS, single for UK SRS, or both.
- 2
Fix the version
For FY2026, choose and record it.
- 3
Run the eight demo questions
On each shortlisted platform.
- 4
Check the export
Process file and full register.
In one sentence
The whole page, said once
The software is only as good as the reasoning it lets an assurer follow.

Frequently asked
Double materiality software, answered
What is double materiality software?
Software that runs a double materiality assessment: it lists sustainability matters, assesses each for its impact on people and the environment and for its financial effect on the company, applies thresholds, and keeps the evidence and reasoning that ESRS 2 IRO-1 and an assurance provider ask for.
What must double materiality software do?
Hold an impact view and a financial view; score severity without averaging scale, scope and irremediable character; apply likelihood only to potential impacts; treat either lens as enough; record the threshold; and export a process description and the full register.
Do I need a materiality matrix?
No. The revised ESRS neither require nor mention one.
A tool that only draws a matrix, without the register and reasoning behind it, does not produce what IRO-1 asks for.
Which ESRS version should the software support?
For FY2026, all three options the rules allow — the 2023 ESRS as amended, those standards with named reliefs, or the revised ESRS — and record the choice.
From FY2027 the revised ESRS apply with no choice.
Is double materiality software needed for UK SRS?
No. UK SRS S1 uses single (financial) materiality.
A UK group that also reports under the ESRS can use the financially material subset as its starting point.
Does the assurance provider look at the software?
The limited assurance opinion covers the process the company carried out to identify the information reported, so the tool’s audit trail is what the provider reads.
Is EFRAG IG 1 still the right method?
It describes the process well but is non-authoritative and written for the 2023 ESRS, so its paragraph references do not match the revised ESRS.
EFRAG had listed no guidance for the revised ESRS as at 11 October 2026.
Do I need a stakeholder survey module?
Not for the ESRS.
Engagement carried out in ongoing due diligence is the key input, and the revised ESRS 1 says no separate engagement process is needed for the materiality assessment.
Which platforms offer double materiality assessments?
The table on this page quotes, alphabetically, the platforms in this site’s registry whose own pages mention materiality. This site ranks none and has tested none.
What if a UK supplier is asked for data by an EU customer?
A supplier with an average of 1,000 employees or fewer may decline information beyond the voluntary standard’s capped datapoints when the request is for the customer’s CSRD reporting.
A full assessment goes well beyond that.
Should I use software or a consultant?
That choice is covered on the double materiality software vs consultants page; this page assumes software and sets out what it must do.
