SBTi cost · fees from SBTi Services’ own schedule

SBTi cost: validation fees by tier, in dollars and pounds

SBTi cost depends on who you are and what you submit: SBTi Services charges $13,000 for a corporate near-term validation in its lowest tier and $1,250 for an SME, under fees effective 5 January 2026.

The full Science Based Targets initiative cost to a company also includes the inventory and target work behind a submission, which the SBTi does not charge for and does not do.

Three questions set the fee · not a quote

In brief

SBTi cost, in one minute

The SBTi itself writes the criteria; its subsidiary SBTi Services validates targets and sets the fees, in a document called the Target Validation Service Offerings.

Version 6.1 was released on 27 October 2025 and has applied since 5 January 2026.

The fee depends on three things: your organisation type (corporate, SME or financial institution), your annual turnover, which sets the tier, and the service you book.

V6.1 says “The tier and organization type are determined at registration, during which the latest financial statement is reviewed.”

Your tier

Science Based Targets initiative cost: find your tier

Choose your organisation type and enter your turnover. The tool reads V6.1 and nothing else, and keeps nothing you type.

Turnover is in euros because V6.1 sets its tiers in euros; use the figure from your latest financial statements, as SBTi Services will.

The SME route has its own eligibility test, including fewer than 10,000 tCO2e of Scope 1 and location-based Scope 2; this tool does not apply it.

From February 2027 the Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2.0 replaces the SME route with Category A and B companies, so check the version you will submit under on the SBTi net zero standard page.

Discounts

SBTi cost discounts: who qualifies

V6.1 says “Discounts are available based on annual turnover and country headquarters, as defined by the World Bank’s income classification table.”

A corporate headquartered in a low-income or lower-middle-income economy can request Discount Level 1 with turnover under €250 million, or Level 2 with turnover of €250 million to €999 million.

They must be requested at registration: “fee discounts will not be considered outside of the registration process.”

A company headquartered in the UK, a high-income economy, does not qualify.

Two SBTi pages disagree

The SBTi Services homepage FAQ still describes discounts by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs’ classification; V6.1, the pricing document, uses the World Bank’s. We follow V6.1.

What the fee buys

What the Science Based Targets initiative cost does not include

V6.1: “All corporate and FI target validation services include a technical review, validation call, and validation decision statement.”

SBTi Services lists what it does not do: choosing the target-setting method, or “assistance with emission factors and calculation of emissions across scopes.”

That work, the GHG Protocol inventory, Scope 3 screening and target modelling, is yours or an adviser’s, and the SBTi consultancy guide explains how to scope it.

No public SBTi document sets resubmission fees, cancellation or refund terms; the validation SOP says only that “Customers must pay all fees according to the contract’s terms.”

Changing service after booking costs more: “Amendments to service type will be charged the full standalone service fee.”

Optional extras are priced separately: the Readiness Assessment Service ($500 for an SME, $4,200 for a corporate), which is not pre-validation, and SBTi Certification ($1,500), a credential for an individual, not a company.

Under V2.0, from 2027, a Category A company also needs third-party assurance of its base-year inventory (criterion C7), which no SBTi fee covers.

Frequently asked

SBTi cost, answered

How much does SBTi cost?

SBTi Services charges by organisation type and turnover: a corporate near-term validation costs $13,000 in Tier 1 (turnover under €250 million) rising to $26,000 in Tier 4, and an SME near-term validation costs $1,250 or $2,000.

These are the Target Validation Service Offerings V6.1 fees, effective 5 January 2026.

What are SBTi submission costs in pounds?

UK-registered companies are invoiced in pounds, excluding 20% VAT, at the rate V6.1 states of £1 = $1.34: a corporate Tier 1 near-term validation is £9,701 and an SME Tier 1 near-term validation is £933.

Is SBTi validation free for SMEs?

No. SME FAQs Q31 says all SMEs have paid a fee for target validation since 15 July 2024.

Under V6.1 it is $1,250 in SME Tier 1 (turnover under €5 million) and $2,000 in SME Tier 2.

What does an SBTi target update cost?

A corporate near-term and/or net-zero update costs $5,500 in Tier 1 to $10,000 in Tier 4, and one fee covers both.

A recalculation that leaves the target within the criteria needs no update at all.

Are there SBTi fee discounts?

Yes, for companies headquartered in low-income or lower-middle-income economies on the World Bank classification, within turnover limits.

They must be requested at registration; V6.1 says discounts are not considered outside it.

A UK company does not qualify.

Does the SBTi fee include consultancy?

No. The fee covers a technical review, a validation call and a decision statement.

SBTi Services says it does not choose your method or calculate your emissions, and it does not offer consultation services.

Is the Science Based Targets initiative cost refundable if targets are rejected?

No public SBTi document says.

The validation SOP says customers pay according to the contract they sign in the Validation Portal, and those terms are not published.
