EPD software: construction product declarations to EN 15804

EPD software models a construction product’s life cycle to the EN 15804 rules and produces the environmental product declaration that designers and whole life carbon assessors draw on.

This page sets out the standards as they stand after the 2026 changes, who uses the data and how, and lists 29 LCA vendors in their own words.

What the software does

What does EPD software do? From inventory to published declaration

EPD software turns a manufacturer’s data into an environmental product declaration: a verified statement of a product’s life cycle impacts, built on life cycle assessment.

ISO 14025:2026 specifies the use of ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 in developing EPDs, according to its abstract.

For construction products, the indicators, modules and calculation rules come from EN 15804+A2, the core product category rules.

The software’s job is to apply those rules consistently, so the declaration can be verified and used by others.

The standards

Which standards apply now? Three changed or confirmed in 2026

The core product rules are EN 15804:2012+A2:2019/AC:2021, published by BSI as BS EN 15804:2012+A2:2019 and shown as current, under review.

The EPD standard itself is now ISO 14025:2026, which replaced the 2006 edition in June 2026 and changed its title, according to ISO.

At building level, BS EN 15978:2026 replaced the 2011 edition on 31 July 2026, and its national foreword says the UK had no mandatory national regulations or methodologies for whole life carbon assessment at publication.

A product that still cites ISO 14025:2006 or bare “EN 15804+A2” without the corrigendum is citing withdrawn editions.

From 1 July 2024Binding on RICS members

The government’s Construction Products Reform White Paper concludes that producing an EPD for products not covered by a designated standard will remain voluntary, and that it will encourage the use of EN 15804+A2.

Demand comes instead from those who assess buildings: RICS members under the whole life carbon standard, referable schemes under the London Plan’s Policy SI 2, and the Department for Education’s upfront limit.

Part Z would make whole life carbon assessment mandatory for larger projects, but it is an industry proposal, not law.

Your declared modules

Which assessments can your EPD feed? Check its modules

The tool beside this takes the modules an EPD declares and shows which RICS whole life carbon boundaries they can feed.

Upfront carbon is modules A0–A5 and embodied carbon adds B1–B5 and C1–C4, under §2.1 of the RICS standard; module D is reported separately.

A product EPD supplies product modules; A0 pre-construction and site activity come from the project, so an assessor always adds something.

What your EPD modules can feed

Upfront carbon (A0–A5): missing A4, A5

A0 pre-construction and site activity in A5 come from the project, not the EPD.

Embodied carbon (A0–A5, B1–B5, C1–C4): missing A4, A5, B1-B5

Any module the EPD does not declare has to come from another source.

Module D: declared; report separately

RICS reports D outside the whole life carbon total.

No UK law requires an EPD, but every whole life carbon assessment needs one, so the software is judged by the assessments its declarations can feed.

Frequently asked

EPD software, answered

What is EPD software?

Software that models a construction product’s life cycle, calculates the indicators the product category rules require, and produces an environmental product declaration for verification and publication.

For construction products the core rules are EN 15804+A2, and the EPD standard is now ISO 14025:2026.

Which version of EN 15804 is current?

EN 15804:2012+A2:2019/AC:2021, published in the UK as BS EN 15804:2012+A2:2019 and shown by BSI as current, under review.

A citation of “EN 15804:2012+A2:2019” without the corrigendum names an edition BSI has withdrawn.

Is ISO 14025:2006 still current?

No. ISO 14025:2026, Edition 2, published in June 2026, replaced it, and the title changed to “Environmental statements and programmes for products — Environmental product declarations (EPDs)”.

Are EPDs mandatory in the UK?

No. The government’s Construction Products Reform White Paper says that producing an EPD for products not covered by a designated standard will remain voluntary, while it will encourage the use of EN 15804+A2.

It also states an intention to stay consistent with the environmental aspects of the EU’s 2024 Construction Products Regulation, which is a proposal, not law.

Is whole life carbon assessment law in England?

Not nationally.

The BS EN 15978:2026 national foreword says that at publication the UK had no mandatory national regulations or methodologies for whole life carbon assessment of buildings, and Part Z is an industry proposal.

It is required locally and by clients: referable schemes in London, Department for Education projects, and RICS members under its professional standard.

Which EPD modules feed an upfront carbon figure?

Under the RICS whole life carbon standard, upfront carbon is modules A0–A5, excluding sequestered biogenic carbon.

A product EPD typically supplies A1–A3 and may declare A4 and A5; A0 and site activities come from the project.

What is module D?

Potential loads and benefits beyond the system boundary, such as reuse, recycling or energy recovery (D1) and exported utilities (D2).

RICS reports module D separately from the whole life carbon total.

What embodied carbon limit does the Department for Education set?

Its CF25 Technical Manual (January 2026) sets an upfront embodied carbon limit of 550 kgCO2e per square metre of gross internal floor area for modules A1–A5, excluding foundations below 1 metre.

Does EPD software need life cycle assessment?

Yes.

ISO 14025:2026 specifies the use of ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 in developing EPDs, so the software is an LCA tool working to the product category rules.

Has this site tested any EPD software?

No. The vendor list quotes what each vendor says about itself, alphabetically, and nothing on the page is a rating.
