LCA software: the standards, the data and the owners

LCA software models a product’s life cycle — materials, manufacture, transport, use and disposal — and turns that model into a life cycle assessment, a product carbon footprint or an environmental product declaration.

This page sets out which standard governs each output, where the data comes from, who owns the tools now and how to test them, with 29 vendors in their own words; this site has tested no products and ranks none.

What LCA software does

Four phases, one model of a product

Life cycle assessment software builds a model of one product, process or service from raw materials to end of life, and calculates its environmental impacts from that model.

ISO 14040:2006 describes the four phases the software supports: goal and scope, life cycle inventory analysis, life cycle impact assessment and interpretation, with reporting and critical review alongside.

ISO 14044:2006 specifies the requirements and guidelines for carrying those phases out.

ISO 14040’s own abstract says it does not describe the technique in detail or specify methods for the individual phases, so the methods a tool offers are choices a practitioner must record.

The standards themselves, family by family and with their current editions, are set out on life cycle assessment and product standards.

What is studied, for whom, the functional unit and the boundary.

  2. 2

Every input and output at every stage: materials, energy, transport, waste.

  3. 3

What the results mean, how sensitive they are, and what they cannot support.

Three outputs, three rulebooks

A full LCA, a product footprint or an EPD

The same product model can produce three different outputs, each governed by its own standard.

A full LCA reports many impact categories; a product carbon footprint reports one; an EPD reports an LCA in a format a programme prescribes.

Product carbon footprint software and PCF software are usually LCA method narrowed to carbon, often with supplier data collection built in.

EPD software is usually LCA software with the product category rules and the declaration format built in.

Read the detailed guidance and references

Ask which output each licence covers: a tool sold for product footprints may not calculate the other impact categories an LCA or an EPD needs.

The picker beside this names the standard for the product question you are answering.

What are you trying to produce?

Use: ISO 14067:2018; or PAS 2050:2011 from BSI; or the GHG Protocol Product Life Cycle Standard. Each covers one impact category, global warming.

Status: ISO 14067:2018 is current but at stage 90.92, “to be revised”, with ISO/WD 14067.2 at working-draft stage and no date. GHG Protocol and ISO formed a joint working group in February 2026 on a harmonised product standard.

What it does not do: ISO 14067 puts carbon offsetting and communication of the footprint outside its scope; PAS 2050 sets no disclosure requirements.

ISO 14067 and the Product Standard: what PCF software must hold

ISO 14067:2018 quantifies the carbon footprint of a product “in a manner consistent with” ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, and covers a single impact category, climate change.

The GHG Protocol’s Product Standard sets requirements a tool has to carry: the boundary for final products “shall include the complete life cycle, from cradle-to-grave”, and a cradle-to-gate boundary must be disclosed and justified.

It requires companies to “collect primary data for all processes under their ownership or control”, and to assess the quality of the data they use.

Results are reported per unit of analysis with a percentage by life cycle stage, and offsets and avoided emissions are not included in them.

Read the detailed guidance and references

The Product Standard says it builds on ISO 14040:2006, ISO 14044:2006 and PAS 2050, adding specification for consistent public reporting of product inventories.

On allocation it says companies “shall avoid allocation wherever possible”, and where it cannot be avoided, allocate by the physical relationships between products before economic or other methods.

Its own page says the main benefit for now is finding hot spots in a life cycle, and that comparing products needs product rules for the category.

ISO lists ISO 14067:2018 at stage 90.92, “to be revised”, with ISO/WD 14067.2 at working-draft stage; ISO states no date for the successor, and none is given here.

Among the vendors this site files under life cycle and product footprint, 7 name ISO 14067 in what their own pages say about product footprints (ASUENE, Climatiq, Green Project Technologies, Greenly, One Click LCA, osapiens, Sweep), and 4 name the GHG Protocol (Climatiq, Green Project Technologies, osapiens, Sweep).

A product footprint for one product is a different measurement from a company’s footprint; the difference is set out on carbon footprint software.

ISO 14025:2026 and EN 15804: declarations built to a format

An environmental product declaration reports a product’s life cycle impacts in a standard format, under product category rules, within an EPD programme.

Both rulebooks behind construction EPDs have moved, so the edition a tool cites is the first thing to check.

For construction products the core product category rules are EN 15804:2012+A2:2019/AC:2021, a CEN standard that BSI publishes in identical text, and a citation without the AC:2021 suffix names a withdrawn edition.

Read the detailed guidance and references

EN 15804’s scope clause says it defines the indicators to declare, the life cycle stages and processes to include, the rules for scenarios, and “the conditions under which construction products can be compared”.

Of the vendors in this guide, 1 — One Click LCA — mention EPDs or EN 15804 in what their own pages say, and 3 are filed for real estate and the built environment (Dcycle, Deepki, One Click LCA).

For buildings, the RICS whole life carbon assessment standard, second edition, has been mandatory for RICS members from 1 July 2024; it is a professional standard, not legislation.

Part Z, which would make whole-life carbon assessment a building regulation, is an industry proposal and not law, as set out on the Future Homes Standard.

An EPD is verified and published by a programme operator, so the questions for a tool are whether its output matches that programme’s rules and whether a verifier can follow it.

Databases and background data

Foreground data you control, background data you license

An LCA model is mostly data, and most of it is not yours.

The Product Standard describes the attributional approach as using “primary data provided by a supplier/customer or average (secondary) data for a given process”.

The background database behind a tool therefore shapes the result as much as the software does, and is often licensed and priced separately.

For significant processes, the Product Standard asks for a statement on the data sources, the data quality and any efforts to improve it.

Read the detailed guidance and references

DESNZ describes its conversion factors as relevant to SECR reporting, and says they may be used for other purposes but “users do so at their own risk”.

A company-reporting factor set is therefore not a substitute for life cycle inventory data for the materials and processes in a product.

Ask each vendor which databases are included, which cost extra, which version each process uses, and what happens to past models when a database is updated.

A supplier’s product footprint is also where product and corporate accounting meet: it can replace a spend-based estimate in Scope 3 category 1, as covered on Scope 3 emissions.

The standards are moving

That makes the ability to rerun a model and keep the original result the capability to test hardest.

As at 11 October 2026, when the registry’s ownership fields were read, 8 of the 29 vendors here record an owner or a merger: Green Project Technologies (Part of ACT Group (date not stated on its site)); Greenly (Merger with Normative announced, September 2026); Normative (Merger with Greenly announced, September 2026); Sami (Part of SGS (majority stake) since November 2025); SimaPro (Part of One Click LCA since September 2025); Sphera (Part of Blackstone since September 2021); Terrascope (Part of XeleratedFifty since February 2026); Zevero (Acquired, 2024 (buyer not named on its site)).

One Click LCA’s release never uses the verb “acquire”, so this page uses its own words: SimaPro and PRé joined the One Click LCA family.

A change of owner can change a database licence, a roadmap and a contract, so ask who you would be contracting with and what leaves with you if the product is retired.

The wider market’s consolidation, beyond life cycle tools, is set out on the carbon accounting software guide.

A claim that names a standard is a starting point for the tests on this page, not a substitute for them.

A tool that implements an ISO 14067 method does not make every footprint built in it conform; that depends on the boundary, data and choices behind each one, which is why the tests use your own product.

Say something about CBAM

18EU, UK or unstated — see each profile

A neighbouring use: CBAM

Embodied emissions for UK CBAM are not a life cycle footprint

The UK CBAM is a tax on specified goods imported into the UK in five sectors — aluminium, cement, fertilisers, hydrogen, and iron and steel — commencing on 1 January 2027 under Part 5 of the Finance Act 2026.

HMRC’s policy summary calculates the charge by multiplying the imported embodied emissions by the CBAM rate, less Carbon Price Relief, and puts the charge on direct emissions.

The boundary is set by the System Boundaries Document, version 1.00 dated 10 July 2026, which S.I. 2026/995 incorporates, not by a life cycle standard.

Read the detailed guidance and references

LCA software can hold the installation and supplier data an importer needs, but the figure it must produce for CBAM follows that mechanism’s rules, not ISO 14067’s.

The UK CBAM is not the EU CBAM, and HMRC says only that UK methods are “broadly designed to support interoperability with the EU CBAM”.

18 of the 29 vendors here say something about CBAM on their own pages; the registry records for each whether the page refers to the EU or the UK mechanism, and One Click LCA’s page names both.

Who pays, when, and how the charge is worked out are set out on the UK CBAM guide.

Carbon labelling software and claims

A footprint on a label is a claim, and claims have their own rules

Carbon labelling software produces a product carbon footprint for a label, and the label is governed separately from the footprint.

ISO 14067 places the communication of a footprint outside its scope.

The Product Standard says that comparative assertions — claims of a product’s overall environmental superiority or equivalence against a competing product — “are not supported by the Product Standard”.

In the UK, the CMA’s Green Claims Code asks that claims consider the full life cycle, and section 11 of the CAP Code governs environmental claims in advertising.

Read the detailed guidance and references

A “carbon neutral product” claim is a further step again: ISO 14068-1:2023 was withdrawn on 11 September 2026 and is being replaced by ISO 14068:2026, which covers carbon neutrality “through the quantification, reduction and offsetting of the carbon footprint”.

PAS 2060 was withdrawn by BSI at the end of 2025, as UKAS records, so no one can be assessed against it today; the detail is on PAS 2060 and ISO 14068.

For software, the practical test is whether a tool keeps the footprint, any offsets and the claim apart, so each can be shown on its own.

Pricing

What vendors publish, and what they do not

Most LCA software vendors do not publish a price.

Of the 29 in this guide, 4 publish a figure on their own pages (Climatiq, Ecochain, Microsoft Sustainability Manager, Zevero); each appears in the directory as the vendor states it, and none is this site’s estimate.

Where a price is published it may be per product or per EPD rather than per user — Zevero’s published add-ons are priced that way — so the unit matters as much as the figure.

Read the detailed guidance and references

For a vendor without a published price, ask for a written three-year cost: the software, each database licence, the number of products or EPDs modelled, verification, training and the cost of exit.

Where a vendor sells a corporate inventory and product footprints, ask whether they are one contract or two.

Verification and EPD programme fees are separate from the software.

The useful question is which tool produces the output you need, to the edition of the standard that governs it, from data you can name.

Frequently asked

LCA software, answered

What is LCA software?

Software for life cycle assessment: it models a product, process or service from raw materials to end of life, holds the inventory of inputs and outputs at each stage, and calculates environmental impacts from it.

ISO 14040 sets out the four phases it supports — goal and scope, inventory analysis, impact assessment and interpretation — and ISO 14044 the requirements for carrying them out.

What is the best LCA software?

This site ranks no products and has tested none, so it names no best.

The useful test is which tool produces the output you need — a full LCA, a product carbon footprint or an EPD — to the standard that governs it, with its background data named and versioned, its allocation choices recorded, and a model you could hand to a critical reviewer or verifier, shown on one of your own products.

What is the difference between LCA software and product carbon footprint software?

A life cycle assessment covers many impact categories under ISO 14040 and ISO 14044; a product carbon footprint covers one, climate change, under ISO 14067 or the GHG Protocol Product Standard.

PCF software is usually LCA method narrowed to carbon, often with a simpler interface and supplier data collection built in.

Ask which impact categories a tool calculates, not what it calls itself.

What is EPD software?

Software that builds an environmental product declaration: a life cycle assessment reported in a fixed format under a programme’s product category rules.

ISO 14025:2026 now governs EPD programmes and the 2006 edition is withdrawn; for construction products the core rules are EN 15804:2012+A2:2019/AC:2021.

An EPD is published by a programme operator after verification, so the software is one part of the route, not the whole of it.

Which standards should LCA software follow?

ISO 14040:2006 and ISO 14044:2006 for a full LCA, both confirmed in 2022.

ISO 14067:2018 or the GHG Protocol Product Standard for a product carbon footprint.

ISO 14025:2026 for EPD programmes, with EN 15804:2012+A2:2019/AC:2021 for construction products.

Ask a vendor which standard each output is built to, and which edition.

Is there free LCA software?

This site’s registry, built from vendors’ own pages, records no vendor in this category whose price is a free plan, though Climatiq publishes a free starter tier for its API alongside paid data and PCF plans. This site has not surveyed open-source tools.

Whatever the licence, the tests are the same: named and versioned background data, recorded allocation choices and an export a reviewer can follow.

Where does LCA software get its data?

From two places.

Foreground data is your own: the materials, energy and processes you control, which the GHG Protocol Product Standard says shall be primary data for processes under your ownership or control.

Background data — average or secondary data for the processes you buy in — comes from databases licensed to or built into the tool, and the Product Standard asks for its quality to be assessed.

Who owns SimaPro?

On 2 September 2025 One Click LCA announced that SimaPro and its developer PRé Sustainability “have joined the One Click LCA family”, and said both products continue as distinct products.

That is the owners’ own wording, as at the registry’s reading on 11 October 2026.

What is carbon labelling software?

Software that produces a product carbon footprint for use on a label or in marketing.

The footprint is governed by ISO 14067 or the Product Standard, but the claim is not: ISO 14067 places communication outside its scope, the Product Standard does not support comparative assertions, and in the UK the CMA’s Green Claims Code and CAP Code section 11 govern what the label may say.

Does LCA software help with UK CBAM?

It can supply data, but CBAM is a different calculation.

The UK CBAM, from 1 January 2027, is a tax on the direct emissions embodied in imported aluminium, cement, fertilisers, hydrogen, and iron and steel, measured against the System Boundaries Document version 1.00 dated 10 July 2026 — not a cradle-to-grave footprint.

The UK CBAM is not the EU CBAM, so ask which a vendor’s CBAM feature serves.

Can LCA software do my company’s Scope 1, 2 and 3 inventory?

Some can.

Of the 29 vendors this site files under life cycle and product footprint, 24 are also filed for organisational carbon accounting and 5 are not.

A product footprint and a corporate inventory have different boundaries and standards; the corporate one is covered on the carbon accounting software guide.

How much does LCA software cost?

Most vendors do not publish a price.
