ISO 14001 software: test the management-system evidence
ISO 14001 software usually means a platform for maintaining parts of an organisation’s environmental management system.
The standard does not prescribe software, and ISO does not certify software products.
The current edition recorded in the Bible is ISO 14001:2026.
Check the edition, transition arrangements and the exact claim a vendor makes before relying on an “ISO-ready” label.
What the system should organise
Which environmental management records matter?
Use the organisation’s actual management-system scope to define the software test: environmental aspects and impacts, applicable obligations, objectives, operational controls, competence records, monitoring, audits, nonconformities and corrective action.

Those are selection prompts based on the management-system job.
The organisation still determines scope, significance, controls and conformity.
Certification and edition
What does an ISO 14001 software claim prove?
It proves only what the vendor can demonstrate about the product.
A claim such as “ISO 14001 certified software” should be checked carefully: certification applies to a defined object and issuer, and ISO says it does not certify products or issue certificates.
The certification of an organisation’s EMS is a separate assessment by a certification body.
UKAS’s transition bulletin sets the current UK-accredited certification timeline for the 2026 edition; it does not endorse software.
Vendor statement
What does a vendor describe on its own page?
Effivity describes its environmental management software as covering modules such as obligations, environmental aspects, documents, audits and corrective actions.
That is the vendor’s own description; this page does not verify the product or treat its “ISO 14001-certified modules” wording as ISO approval.

Tick a test only when the vendor has demonstrated it with a representative record and shown the evidence or export.

Still to test: Trace one aspect or obligation to its source; Show the linked risk, control, owner and due date; Show audit findings, approvals and corrective action; Export the record and its revision history.
Illustrative buyer case
How might a UK manufacturer with several sites test a software claim?
Illustrative only: a manufacturer needs to organise environmental aspects, obligations, controls and corrective actions across its sites, then show how the records support its own management system.

Decision points
What should the buyer carry into the decision?
- A management system is the organisation’s system: software does not certify it.
- ISO 14001:2026 is the current edition: verify the transition plan with the certification body.
- An audit trail should show who changed and approved each record.:An audit trail should show who changed and approved each record.
Ask the vendor to follow one environmental aspect through its control, review and export.
Choose an EMS tool by the records and review trail it can maintain, and verify certification claims with the issuing body and its accreditation scope.
Frequently asked
ISO 14001 software questions, answered
What is ISO 14001 software?
It is software a vendor says can support some part of an organisation’s environmental management system, such as document control, obligations, objectives, audits or corrective actions.
ISO 14001 defines management-system requirements; it does not prescribe a software product.
Does ISO certify ISO 14001 software?
No. ISO says it does not perform certification or issue certificates.
A certification body assesses an organisation’s management system; a software feature or module is not an ISO certificate.
What is the current ISO 14001 edition?
The Bible records ISO 14001:2026 as the current edition, published on 15 April 2026.
The previous 2015 edition is withdrawn; consult the current ISO and UKAS materials for certification-transition details.
What should an ISO 14001 software demo show?
Ask the vendor to trace one environmental aspect or obligation through its identified risk, control, objective, owner, evidence, review and corrective action.
Then export the record and its change history.
Does ISO 14001 software prove environmental performance?
No. ISO 14001 concerns an environmental management system and does not set specific environmental performance criteria.
Software records alone do not prove environmental outcomes or legal compliance.
