Energy management software: start with the meter data
Energy management software can consolidate energy records and help an organisation monitor its buildings, equipment and consumption.
It is a product category, not a UK certification or legal status.
The practical test is whether the system can turn source records into outputs for the ESOS notification workflow, an annual energy and carbon disclosure or an ISO 50001 management-system workflow without losing the evidence behind them.
What to organise
Which energy records should the system handle?
Start with the sites, meters, fuels, bills and building systems that make up the organisation’s energy data.
Then identify which outputs are needed: internal performance monitoring, an ESOS evidence pack, annual carbon reporting, or records for an energy management system.

Different jobs
How do ESOS, ISO 50001 and building energy fit?
ESOS software supports an assessment and filing workflow.
The Environment Agency’s Phase 4 guidance and the amending Regulations define the process; a software product cannot replace the required assessor work or notification.
ISO 50001 is an energy-management-system standard.
Its requirements concern how an organisation manages and improves energy performance, not which software it buys.
Building energy tools may focus on portfolio dashboards, meter data, alarms or controls.
Vendors describe their own products differently, so compare the specific inputs, outputs and integrations against your estate.
Vendor statements
What do some vendors say their systems do?
Kiona describes Energinet as an energy-management system for energy, waste and environmental reporting, with meter targets, imports and exports.
MRI Software UK describes bringing property-portfolio energy data together for analysis and reporting.
Octanise describes consolidating meter data and surfacing operational energy information.
Those are statements from the vendors’ own product pages.
They are not independent comparisons, and none establishes that a product is certified by ISO or approved by the Environment Agency.

Tick a test only when the vendor has demonstrated it with a representative record and shown the evidence or export.
0 of 4 tests demonstrated (0%). This is a checklist result, not a score for the vendor.
Still to test: Import and validate one meter or bill record; Map the record to a site, unit and reporting period; Show corrections, review and approval history; Export the source data, calculation and evidence.
Illustrative buyer case
How might a UK multi-site manufacturer test a software claim?
Illustrative only: a UK manufacturer wants to join meter records, an ESOS assessment, an energy-management system and annual reporting without treating one platform label as proof of certification or compliance.

Decision points
What should the buyer carry into the decision?
- Energy data has a source and period: keep both visible.
- A software claim is not certification: check the owner and scope.
- An export is useful only when its method and evidence travel with it.:An export is useful only when its method and evidence travel with it.
Ask the vendor to reproduce one site-level energy record and export its workings.
Choose energy software by the records and review trail it can produce, then verify every compliance or certification claim with the relevant scheme owner.
Frequently asked
Energy software questions, answered
What does energy management software do?
It can bring together utility bills, meter readings and building-system data, then help teams inspect consumption, identify anomalies, set targets and prepare reports.
The vendor’s own product page is the source for any particular capability.
Is energy management software the same as ESOS software?
No. Energy management software is a broad category.
ESOS is a UK regulatory assessment and notification process; software can organise its data and evidence, while the rules still determine who must assess, review and notify.
Does ISO 50001 approve energy software?
No. ISO 50001 specifies requirements for an energy management system used by an organisation. It does not certify software products.
ISO itself says it does not perform certification or issue certificates.
What should a buyer test in a demo?
Use one real meter or bill and trace it through import, validation, unit conversion, assignment to a building or activity, review and export.
Ask the vendor to show missing data, corrections, permissions and the audit trail.
Can one energy system support SECR and UK SRS?
A shared energy dataset may support work across several reports, but the software does not establish that a company meets any reporting rule.
Map each required output and reporting period separately, then check the calculations and evidence.
