SBTi software — from the output backwards
SBTi software for target setting and tracking Compare ESG software for a cross-framework selection method.
For the broader workflow linking targets, emissions and reduction actions, see net zero software.
This page describes required outputs and questions to test, not a product ranking, certification or endorsement.
Start with the record
What should SBTi software do?
A system may organise the inventory, boundary choices, target inputs, progress and supporting records.
The applicable criteria and SBTi’s own target-setting tools remain the authority; a vendor product does not validate a target.

Claims to check
Does the SBTi certify software?
No. The SBTi validates targets submitted by companies, not software products.
Treat “SBTi-approved software” as an unverified vendor claim unless the SBTi publishes a specific approval list.
Ask the vendor to name the exact owner-published list or rule behind any “approved”, “certified” or “compliant” claim, and verify that claim at its source.
Before the contract
What should a company ask in a demo?
Ask which criteria version and official tool the workflow follows, how base-year data and recalculations are retained, and whether the company can export the calculations and evidence.
Also check permissions, data retention, access controls, export format, contract exit and whether estimates are distinguishable from measured data.
A worked case
How does a company test the workflow end to end?
Illustrative case: a UK company prepares an annual sustainability disclosure and asks a vendor to demonstrate one requirement using its own source data.
The company checks the reporting boundary, the underlying source record, the method applied, the disclosure output and whether each step can be exported for review.

What a system may cover
Which software layer handles each job?
Separate measurement, data collection, disclosure assembly and tagging in the demo; a single product label does not show which layer is actually supported.

Order of work
What should a buyer do before signing?
Set the reporting scope before selecting a tool, and use the same evidence request with each vendor.

Where does this page fit?
Use these guides to confirm the underlying requirements and adjacent software jobs:
A software label does not establish compliance: choose by the disclosures, evidence and exports the company needs to produce.
Key points
Software claims, checked
- Start with the framework, regulation or target process that applies.
- Trace one figure from its source through method, review and final output.
- Ask vendors to substantiate their own claims; do not treat software as certification.
- Keep an exportable evidence trail and confirm the contract exit path.
