TNFD reporting software: it starts with a map
TNFD reporting software helps a company assess and disclose its nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities.
Unlike carbon, nature is local, so the first thing any tool needs is reliable location data for sites and suppliers.
The framework itself is on the TNFD guide and the TNFD reporting requirements.
Status
Is TNFD reporting software needed for compliance?
No: the TNFD Recommendations are voluntary, and the TNFD sets them out with four pillars and its LEAP approach (TNFD).
The ISSB has decided to propose nature-related requirements as an IFRS Practice Statement, which is not a Standard and is non-mandatory unless a jurisdiction requires it (IFRS Foundation).
New or amended ISSB material does not apply in the UK without UK endorsement (FRC).
What the tool holds
What does TNFD software need to hold for LEAP?
LEAP stands for Locate, Evaluate, Assess and Prepare, and each step needs different data.
| LEAP step | What the software should hold |
|---|---|
| Locate | Coordinates of own sites and key supplier locations, and their proximity to sensitive areas |
| Evaluate | Dependencies and impacts on nature at each location |
| Assess | The resulting risks and opportunities for the business |
| Prepare | The response, targets and disclosure, with evidence |
UK data
Which UK nature data can a tool draw on?
In England, 48 Local Nature Recovery Strategies now cover the whole country, each published by its lead local authority (Defra).
Ask the vendor which public datasets it uses for each step, how current they are and whether you can see the source.
Biodiversity net gain for developments is a separate planning duty, covered by the sister site’s guides rather than here; for wider ESG data see sustainability data management software.
The demonstration
What should you test before buying?
Ask the vendor to run LEAP for two of your real sites.
Software demo · evidence check
TNFD demo coverage
Tick a test only when the vendor has demonstrated it with a representative record and shown the evidence or export.
0 of 5 tests demonstrated (0%). This is a checklist result, not a score for the vendor.
Still to test: Map both sites and show nearby sensitive areas with the data source named; Record a dependency and an impact for each site with evidence; Turn one dependency into a risk with a stated time horizon; Draft a disclosure against the TNFD pillars; Export the locations, assessments and evidence.
Frequently asked
TNFD reporting software, answered
What is TNFD reporting software?
Software that holds the location of a company’s sites and value chain, records nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities under the TNFD’s LEAP approach, and keeps the evidence for each.
Is TNFD reporting mandatory in the UK?
No. The TNFD Recommendations are voluntary, and no UK rule requires them.
Will the ISSB make nature reporting mandatory?
The ISSB has decided to propose nature-related requirements in the form of an IFRS Practice Statement, which is non-mandatory unless a jurisdiction chooses to require it.
New ISSB material does not apply in the UK without UK endorsement.
Is there TNFD-approved software?
This guide found no TNFD list of approved software; treat any vendor claim of TNFD alignment as a claim to test.
