Software · the GHG Protocol, cited
Greenhouse gas protocol software is any tool that calculates and reports an inventory to the GHG Protocol’s standards.
The Protocol is a family of documents amended over time, it no longer reviews tools, and it is being rewritten with ISO, so “aligned” is a claim to test against named texts.
This page sets out those texts and the tests, then lists 61 vendors in their own words; this site has tested none and ranks none.
The standard is a family
The Corporate Standard as amended, and the Scope 3 Standard where Scope 3 is reported.
“The GHG Protocol” is not one document, and a tool that cites only the 2004 PDF is citing an incomplete text.
The Corporate Standard was amended in 2013 to add nitrogen trifluoride, and in 2015 by the Scope 2 Guidance, which calls itself an amendment to it.
Scope 3 is optional under the Corporate Standard, but a company using the Scope 3 Standard accounts for all fifteen categories and justifies any exclusion under §6.2.
So the first question for any vendor is which documents, and which edition of each, its calculations follow.

Not newly: the Built on GHG Protocol review service is closed until further notice.
The GHG Protocol says on its Built on GHG Protocol page that the review service “will be closed until further notice” while it continues to host previously approved tools.
It also warns that where a listed document predates the standard or guidance it conforms to, it cannot confirm compliance with the most recent guidance.
The mark can be narrower than it sounds: PCAF’s own standard page says it covers six asset classes from its first edition and nothing added since.
None of that is a criticism of any tool; it means the claim is the vendor’s, and the evidence is in the demonstration.
Reviewed for conformance before the service closed; still hosted by the GHG Protocol.
May predate later guidance, the GHG Protocol warns. What most tools mean today: the vendor’s reading of the standards.
Test it against the named texts on your own data.Scope 1 and 2 GHG accounting and reporting
The required minimum: Scopes 1 and 2, seven gases, both Scope 2 methods, biomass apart.
Chapter 9 of the Corporate Standard requires a minimum of Scope 1 and Scope 2, so this is where any tool should be strongest.
Chapter 6 lists the four Scope 1 source categories: stationary combustion, mobile combustion, process emissions and fugitive emissions such as equipment leaks.
Direct CO2 from burning biomass is kept out of Scope 1 and reported separately, while its methane and nitrous oxide stay in Scope 1, as the GHG Protocol’s Calculation Tools FAQ confirms.
Chapter 5 requires a recalculation policy whose significance threshold the company sets and discloses; the 5% figure often quoted is the SBTi’s, for targets, according to the GHG Protocol’s technical assistance.
| Element | What the standard says | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Required minimum | Scope 1 and Scope 2 | Corporate Standard Ch 9 |
| Scope 1 sources | Stationary and mobile combustion, process and fugitive emissions | Ch 6 |
| Biomass CO2 | Not in Scope 1; reported separately | Ch 4, Ch 9 |
| Scope 2 | Location-based and market-based methods | Scope 2 Guidance |
| Boundary | Equity share, or financial or operational control | Ch 3 |
| Recalculation | A policy with a company-set, disclosed threshold | Ch 5 |
Testing the claim
Filter the measurement tests by what you report, then run them on your data.
The tests beside this come from the provisions that make each one matter, and name no product.
Pick the duties you report under and the list narrows to what your tool must pass.
The mechanics behind each test, from consolidation to factor APIs, are on GHG accounting software.
Nothing on this page is a rating, ranking or recommendation of any product.

The exit
Each test is our reading of the cited provision as something to see on screen; the provision is the authority.
Tick a test once the vendor has shown it on your data.
Nothing you tick is stored or sent.
The Protocol’s own tools
For one source, sometimes; for a whole inventory reported each year, rarely.
The GHG Protocol publishes calculation tools and a Calculation Tools FAQ on its own site.
They are a sound reference for a single source and for checking a vendor’s arithmetic.
A UK reporter also needs the DESNZ factor set for each activity year, under ¶1.10 of the methodology paper, and last year’s figures kept as disclosed.
That is where a platform earns its keep: many sources, many years, one audit trail.

The revision
Nothing yet: the existing standards stay in effect until a revised one is published.
The GHG Protocol’s update programme says the existing standards and guidance stay in effect while it works.
ISO 14064-1:2018 is current and also marked for revision in the ISO catalogue.
UK SRS S2 points at the 2004 Corporate Standard by name, so a tool that switched early to a draft would be reporting to a text the standard does not name.
Ask each vendor how it will version its calculations when the new standard lands, so that your prior years stay as disclosed.
UK reporting
UK SRS S2 names it; SECR asks for the method used.
UK SRS S2 ¶29(a)(ii) requires emissions to be measured in accordance with the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard (2004), unless a jurisdictional authority or an exchange requires a different method, according to the standard.
¶C3 allows a different method in the first year only, and the standard does not say whether its “(2004)” reference takes in the 2013 and 2015 amendments, so ask a vendor which reading it applies.
Listed companies in UKLR 6, 14, 15, 16 and 22 apply UK SRS on a comply-or-explain basis for periods beginning on or after 1 January 2027, under PS26/19.
Where Scope 3 is reported, UK SRS S2 asks a company to consider all fifteen categories and disclose which it includes, and ¶C4 relieves a company from disclosing Scope 3 at all, with no time limit.
SECR asks for a statement of the methodology used under Schedule 7, and the GHG Protocol is the usual answer.

Frequently asked
Software that calculates and reports a company’s greenhouse gas inventory following the GHG Protocol standards: Scopes 1, 2 and 3, the seven gases, the two Scope 2 methods and a base-year recalculation policy.
Not newly.
The GHG Protocol says its Built on GHG Protocol review service is closed until further notice, though it still hosts previously approved tools and warns that older listings may predate later guidance.
A vendor’s “GHG Protocol-aligned” is its own claim, to be tested.
Yes.
It publishes calculation tools and a Calculation Tools FAQ on its own site.
They are spreadsheets for specific sources, not a full reporting platform.
At least the Corporate Standard (2004, amended in 2013 for gases and in 2015 by the Scope 2 Guidance), and, where Scope 3 is reported, the Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard of 2011.
The Corporate Standard requires reporting a minimum of Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions; Scope 3 is optional under that standard.
A company that uses the Scope 3 Standard accounts for all fifteen categories and justifies any exclusion.
A tool that covers the Corporate Standard’s required minimum: direct emissions from stationary and mobile combustion, process and fugitive sources, and indirect emissions from purchased energy, reported location-based and, where the company has contracts, market-based.
Yes, but nothing revised exists yet.
The GHG Protocol and ISO plan a single co-branded corporate standard, with a consultation estimated for Q2 2027 and publication estimated for Q4 2028.
Until then the existing standards stay in effect.
No, but they are converging.
ISO 14064-1:2018 is current and marked for revision, and the GHG Protocol and ISO are consolidating their corporate standards.
UK SRS S2 ¶29(a)(ii) requires greenhouse gas emissions to be measured in accordance with the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard (2004), unless a jurisdictional authority or exchange requires a different method, with a first-year relief in ¶C3.
Listed companies in UKLR 6, 14, 15, 16 and 22 apply UK SRS on a comply-or-explain basis for periods from 1 January 2027.
SECR asks companies to state the methodology they used.
The GHG Protocol does not prescribe UK factors.
DESNZ publishes one set a year for activity mostly within that year, relevant to SECR, and a UK tool should name which set it used.
Ask which documents and editions the tool follows, then check the required elements on your own data: the seven gases, both Scope 2 methods, biomass CO2 reported separately and a recalculation policy with your own threshold.
No. The tests on this page come from the standards cited, and the vendor list quotes what each vendor says about itself.
