IFRS S2 reporting software: start from the standard, not the demo

No software makes a report comply with IFRS S2: the standards say nothing about software, and compliance is asserted for the report itself (IFRS S1 ¶72).

What software can do is produce and evidence the figures the standard requires, so the way to choose one is to test it against those requirements.

What the standard asks

The outputs a system must support

Assessing a tool

Ten questions to put to any vendor

1. Which IFRS S2 paragraphs does each output serve, and which does the tool not cover?

2. Does it apply the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard, and record the equity share or control approach chosen?

3. Can it report the extent to which Scope 3 uses specific-activity and verified inputs, as B56 requires?

4. Does it cover all 15 Scope 3 categories and record why any are excluded?

5. For a bank, insurer or asset manager, can it disaggregate financed emissions by industry and asset class, and support the December 2025 classification choices?

6. Does it keep an audit trail from source data and emission factors to each disclosed figure, for an assurer to follow?

7. Can it hold the judgements, assumptions and measurement uncertainty behind each figure next to the figure?

8. Does it connect to the finance system, so carrying amounts and capital expenditure match the accounts?

9. Can it tag disclosures with the IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Taxonomy, if your jurisdiction requires digital filing?

10. Will it support the UK text — UK SRS S2’s “may” on industry guidance and ¶B59A on financed emissions — as well as IFRS S2?

  1. 1

    Ask for the paragraph

For each output, which IFRS S2 paragraph it serves.

  2. 2

    Ask for the evidence trail

From source data to disclosed figure, including estimates.

  3. 3

    Test with your data

A pilot on a real Scope 3 category or portfolio, not a demo dataset.

  4. 4

    Check the exit

Data export, audit access, and what happens when you leave.

What regulators found

The problems software should help solve

Australia’s regulator found that disclosures resting on defined methods, such as Scope 1 and 2 and internal carbon prices, were consistent across companies (ASIC REP 839).

The weaknesses were in connecting the sustainability report to the financial statements, explaining judgements, and labelling voluntary Scope 3 figures.

Those are the areas where a system that links data, assumptions and accounts can help most, and where a demo is least likely to show it.

A finding from the first reports

ASIC found line items in financial statements that appeared to relate to the current financial effects of climate risks or opportunities, with no corresponding information in the sustainability report.

In the UK

Software for UK SRS S2

A UK listed company in UKLR 6, 14, 15, 16 or 22 reports against UK SRS S2 on a comply-or-explain basis for periods beginning on or after 1 January 2027, under the FCA’s PS26/19.

UK SRS S2 is built from IFRS S2 and shares its metrics, so the same questions apply; for every other UK company it is voluntary.

SECR reporting of UK energy and Scope 1 and 2 emissions is a separate legal duty, and tools for it are compared on SECR reporting software.

Frequently asked

IFRS S2 software, answered

What should IFRS S2 reporting software do?

Produce what IFRS S2 requires and evidence it: Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions under the GHG Protocol with the measurement approach and data-quality information the standard asks for, financed emissions where relevant, the other six cross-industry metrics, target tracking, and a record of the judgements and assumptions behind each figure, connected to the financial statements.

Is there ISSB-compliant sustainability software?

IFRS S1 and S2 say nothing about software: an entity asserts compliance for its report, and only if every requirement is met (IFRS S1 ¶72).

Treat any “ISSB-compliant software” claim as a vendor statement to test against the standard.

Does IFRS S2 reporting have to be digitally tagged?

Not under IFRS S2 itself.

The IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Taxonomy provides tags for jurisdictions and companies that report digitally, and it introduces no new requirement.

Whether tagging is required depends on the jurisdiction.

Which ESG software is best for IFRS S2?

We do not rank vendors.

The right tool depends on the company’s emissions profile, value chain, industry and existing finance systems.

This page sets out questions to put to any vendor, and links our individual reviews.

Can spreadsheets meet IFRS S2?

Nothing in IFRS S2 requires software.

What it requires is the disclosures, and behind them consistent measurement over time and a connection to the financial statements; how a company achieves that is its own choice.
