ISO 50001 software: continual improvement, measured

ISO 50001 software runs an energy management system: it measures energy use, finds the significant uses and tracks improvement against a baseline.

In the UK it matters more than ever, because ISO 50001 is one of only two ESOS Phase 4 compliance routes.

The standard is explained on the ISO 50001 guide.

What it runs

What does ISO 50001 need software to hold?

ISO 50001 requires continual energy performance improvement but does not set the level of improvement to be achieved (ISO).

Planning includes an energy review, significant energy uses, energy performance indicators (EnPIs) and energy baselines (EnBs).

A 2024 amendment adds that the organisation shall determine whether climate change is a relevant issue (ISO 50001 Amd 1:2024).

So the software has to hold metered data, the baseline, the indicators and the actions, and show the trend.

ESOS

How does ISO 50001 software help with ESOS Phase 4?

In Phase 4 the only compliance routes are an ESOS energy audit or ISO 50001; Display Energy Certificates and Green Deal Assessments were removed (SI 2026/701).

Where ISO 50001 certification covers total or significant energy consumption, the participant is deemed to have met the lead assessor, audit and report duties.

A notification of compliance is still required, so the software should still produce the figures the notification needs.

See ESOS software.

Certification

Who certifies ISO 50001, and is the software certified?

Certification bodies audit energy management systems to ISO 50003 under ISO/IEC 17021-1, and UKAS accredits them (UKAS).

The software is never certified; only the organisation’s management system is.

Outside ESOS, UK schemes recommend ISO 50001 without requiring it; for example, an energy management system is not mandatory for the new Climate Change Agreements scheme (DESNZ).

The demonstration

What should you test before buying?

Bring a year of half-hourly or monthly meter data for one site.

Software demo · evidence check

ISO 50001 demo coverage

Tick a test only when the vendor has demonstrated it with a representative record and shown the evidence or export.

Which outputs did the demonstration prove?

0 of 5 tests demonstrated (0%). This is a checklist result, not a score for the vendor.

Still to test: Build an energy review and identify significant energy uses; Set an energy baseline and an EnPI, normalised for weather or output; Track an improvement action against the EnPI; Record an internal audit finding and its correction; Produce the energy figures an ESOS notification needs.

Frequently asked

ISO 50001 software, answered

What is ISO 50001 software?

Software that runs an energy management system to ISO 50001: the energy review, significant energy uses, energy performance indicators and baselines, objectives, actions and internal audits.

Can ISO 50001 replace an ESOS audit?

Yes, in Phase 4: where certification covers total or significant energy consumption, the participant is treated as having met the lead assessor, audit and report duties.

A notification of compliance is still required.

Is ISO 50001 software certified?

No. Certification bodies audit an organisation’s energy management system to ISO 50003; the software is not certified.

Does ISO 50001 have to cover 100% of energy for ESOS?

No. That figure is wrong for Phase 4; ISO 50001 covering total or significant energy consumption is enough for the exemption.
