XBRL sustainability software: test the taxonomy-to-filing path
XBRL sustainability software maps report information to machine-readable taxonomy concepts and produces digital outputs.
The right taxonomy depends on the reporting framework and filing rules.
For the revised ESRS, EFRAG released a draft taxonomy in September 2026 and states tagging is not yet mandatory.
IFRS, ESRS, ESEF and UK filing taxonomies are distinct systems.
What the tool does
What should the XBRL workflow show?
Ask the vendor to show the source disclosure, selected taxonomy concept, reporting context, units, dimensions, validation results and generated filing output.
Confirm whether the tool handles only tagging or also report authoring, validation and submission.

One format, many taxonomies
How should you check taxonomy coverage?
Ask for the framework name, taxonomy version and filing jurisdiction in writing.
A vendor’s support for XBRL does not show that it supports the relevant ESRS taxonomy, IFRS taxonomy, ESEF taxonomy or UK digital filing taxonomy.
For current ESRS draft status and the difference between a datapoint list and a taxonomy, see the ESRS XBRL taxonomy guide.
Vendor-owned claims
What do vendors say their products support?
Workiva describes XHTML export and built-in XBRL tagging in its sustainability reporting product.
Emistra describes XBRL tagging for CSRD sustainability reports, and Salesforce documents an XBRL tagging-provider workflow in its help centre.
Those are statements from the vendors’ own pages.
Check the exact taxonomy and supported filing path in your own demonstration.

Tick a test only when the vendor has demonstrated it with a representative record and shown the evidence or export.

Still to test: Identify the taxonomy and version for this filing; Inspect concept, context, unit and any extension tag; Run the taxonomy and filing validations; Export the report and mapping history.
Illustrative buyer case
How might a company preparing a digital sustainability report test a software claim?
Illustrative only: a company has a sustainability report and wants to test whether a tagging workflow uses the correct taxonomy, preserves contexts and units, and reports validation errors clearly.

Decision points
What should the buyer carry into the decision?
- XBRL is a reporting format: the applicable taxonomy depends on the filing.
- Taxonomy status differs by regime: verify whether the rule is final or draft.
- Certification is specific to a directory’s stated scope.:Certification is specific to a directory’s stated scope.
Ask the vendor to tag one representative disclosure and show its validation and audit history.
Choose XBRL software by whether it can map the correct taxonomy version to a validated, exportable filing for the relevant reporting regime.
Frequently asked
XBRL software questions, answered
What does XBRL sustainability software do?
It can map narrative or numeric disclosures to taxonomy concepts, validate tag structure and produce a machine-readable report.
Check which taxonomy and filing route the product supports.
Is ESRS XBRL tagging mandatory?
EFRAG’s 2026 draft taxonomy release says tagging is not yet mandatory while technical standards are pending adoption.
Confirm the current law and filing rules for the relevant jurisdiction and reporting period.
Does XBRL International certify sustainability software?
XBRL International operates a certified software directory.
Verify the named product and certification scope in the directory; a general XBRL feature claim is not itself a certification.
Can one XBRL tool tag every sustainability report?
No. Taxonomies and filing formats differ by framework and jurisdiction.
Ask the vendor to identify each supported taxonomy, its version, filing channel and validation checks.
What should we test before choosing an XBRL product?
Tag a representative disclosure, inspect the taxonomy concept and context, validate the output, then export the rendered and machine-readable reports with the mapping history.
