B Impact · evidence · certification
B Corp software: B Impact first, other tools second
B Corp software can mean three different things: B Lab's own B Impact platform, tools that help gather the evidence B Lab asks for, and software companies that are themselves B Corps.
This guide covers the first two.
It explains what B Impact does, what the new B Lab Standards need a tool to evidence, and why no product can certify a company.
The official tool
What is B Impact, and is it free?
B Impact is B Lab's own digital platform for measuring, managing and improving a company's impact (B Lab).
Registration is free and gives access to a self-assessment against the latest B Lab Standards and to the SDG Action Manager.
B Corp Certification starts there: a company registers on B Impact and begins its self-assessment (B Lab).
B Lab published its new standards on the B Impact platform in April 2025, and is building a tool inside it for the risk review in Foundation Requirement 3 (B Lab).
So the first piece of B Corp software any company uses is free and comes from B Lab itself.
What has to be evidenced
What do the new B Lab Standards need software to evidence?
The B Lab Standards were rewritten in April 2025 and moved away from cumulative point scoring (B Lab).
There is no longer a target point score, so the old "80 points on the B Impact Assessment" is obsolete, even though some B Lab pages still mention it.
Instead a company meets Foundation Requirements and then requirements across seven Impact Topics, phased in at Year 0, Year 3 and Year 5.
| Impact Topic | What a supporting tool might hold |
|---|---|
| Purpose and stakeholder governance | Board minutes, stakeholder engagement records, the amended articles |
| Climate action | An emissions inventory, targets and a reduction plan |
| Justice, equity, diversity and inclusion | Workforce data and the policies behind it |
| Government affairs and collective action | Lobbying and membership records |
| Fair work | Pay, benefits and working-conditions data |
| Human rights | Supply-chain risk assessments and due diligence |
| Environmental stewardship and circularity | Resource use, waste and product data |
The right column is our editorial illustration of the evidence each topic is likely to need, not B Lab's list; check each requirement in B Lab's own standards.
More on the standards themselves is on the B Corp certification guide.
Beyond B Impact
Which other software helps with B Corp certification?
Most companies use B Impact alongside the tools they already have for each topic.
For climate action, that usually means carbon accounting software built on the GHG Protocol and, where a target is set, software for SBTi targets.
For human rights and supply chains, it means supply chain risk management software.
For governance, fair work and diversity, the evidence usually sits in HR and board systems the company already runs.
Some companies add an ESG software platform to bring these together, but that is a convenience, not a B Lab requirement.
Who decides
Can software certify a company as a B Corp?
No: under the new model, certification is carried out by an independent, B Lab-approved assurance provider meeting requirements based on ISO 17021-1 (ISO).
B Lab no longer verifies companies directly, and the Foundation Requirement 3 risk tool is self-declared.
B Lab publishes no list of approved third-party software that this guide could find.
A tool described as "B Corp certified" is usually a software company that is itself a B Corp.
That says something about the vendor, not about whether its product can get your company certified.
UK specifics
What is different for a UK B Corp?
B Lab UK requires a company to amend its own Articles of Association with prescribed mission-aligned wording (B Lab UK).
Section 172 of the Companies Act is not amended by certification; changing it is the aim of a separate campaign (Companies Act s.172).
B Lab UK's own pages disagree on the certification cycle: some say three years, others say five years with a Year 3 audit, which is the figure that matches B Lab's global standards.
No software decides either question, but a governance tool should hold the amended articles and the dates of each audit.
The demonstration
What should you test before buying a B Corp tool?
Ask the vendor to show one Impact Topic end to end, using your own data.
Software demo · evidence check
B Corp tool demo coverage
Tick a test only when the vendor has demonstrated it with a representative record and shown the evidence or export.
0 of 5 tests demonstrated (0%). This is a checklist result, not a score for the vendor.
Still to test: Map each output to a named B Lab requirement and its Year 0, 3 or 5 phase; Show how evidence is exported for an assurance provider; Calculate emissions under the GHG Protocol, with the factor set named; Keep a dated record of governance changes, including the articles; Avoid any point score presented as a current requirement.
If a product cannot do these, B Impact and the systems the company already has may be enough.
Frequently asked
B Corp software, answered
Is there official B Corp software?
B Lab’s own platform is B Impact, which is free to register for.
B Corp Certification starts there, with a self-assessment against the B Lab Standards.
Does B Lab certify or approve other software?
B Lab publishes no list of approved third-party software that this guide could find.
Other tools can gather evidence or track performance, but certification runs through B Lab’s process and an approved assurance provider.
Do I still need to score 80 points?
No. Under the B Lab Standards published in April 2025 there is no longer a target point score; companies meet Foundation Requirements and requirements across seven Impact Topics.
Some older B Lab pages still mention 80 points.
What does B Corp reporting software need to cover?
Evidence for each Impact Topic: purpose and stakeholder governance; climate action; justice, equity, diversity and inclusion; government affairs and collective action; fair work; human rights; and environmental stewardship and circularity.
Does a UK B Corp have to change its articles?
Yes.
B Lab UK requires the company to amend its own Articles of Association with prescribed wording.
Section 172 of the Companies Act itself is not amended.
