ESG software — from the output backwards
ESG software for UK companies Compare ESG software for a cross-framework selection method.
This page describes required outputs and questions to test, not a product ranking, certification or endorsement.
For a focused look at environmental management system records and software claims, see ISO 14001 software.
For the broader operational-data and management category, see sustainability software.
Supplier assessment workflows may also involve the EcoVadis platform and preparation tools.
For environmental disclosure questionnaires, see CDP reporting software and provider claims.
For procurement and impact workflows, see the social value reporting software guide.
For packaging producer data workflows, see the EPR packaging reporting software guide.
For supplier due-diligence and risk workflows, see supply-chain risk management software.
Start with the record
What does ESG software do?
“ESG software” is an umbrella description, not a regulatory category.
Products may support data collection, emissions calculations, controls, disclosure assembly or several of those jobs; the company still decides which framework or legal duty applies.

Claims to check
How should a company compare ESG software?
Write the required outputs first, then test a vendor’s own claims against them.
Ask for a source-to-disclosure trace, methodology, evidence export and a clear account of what the platform does not cover.
Ask the vendor to name the exact owner-published list or rule behind any “approved”, “certified” or “compliant” claim, and verify that claim at its source.
Before the contract
Is ESG software certified?
There is no universal ESG-software certification.
Some programme owners publish specific provider lists; outside those lists, describe features as vendor claims rather than approval.
Also check permissions, data retention, access controls, export format, contract exit and whether estimates are distinguishable from measured data.
A worked case
How does a company test the workflow end to end?
Illustrative case: a UK company prepares an annual sustainability disclosure and asks a vendor to demonstrate one requirement using its own source data.
The company checks the reporting boundary, the underlying source record, the method applied, the disclosure output and whether each step can be exported for review.

What a system may cover
Which software layer handles each job?
Separate measurement, data collection, disclosure assembly and tagging in the demo; a single product label does not show which layer is actually supported.

What should a buyer do before signing?
Set the reporting scope before selecting a tool, and use the same evidence request with each vendor.

Key points
Software claims, checked
- Start with the framework, regulation or target process that applies.
- Trace one figure from its source through method, review and final output.
- Ask vendors to substantiate their own claims; do not treat software as certification.
- Keep an exportable evidence trail and confirm the contract exit path.
