Supply chain sustainability software: what law asks, and what buyers ask

Supply chain sustainability software runs a buyer’s supplier programme: questionnaires, ratings, audits, corrective actions and the evidence behind them.

UK law asks for much less than most programmes collect, so this page separates the two, gives the tests that follow, and lists 41 vendors in their own words; this site has tested none and ranks none.

What the software does

What does supply chain sustainability software do? Five jobs, from request to evidence

Supply chain sustainability software is the system a buyer uses to ask suppliers about their environmental, labour and ethics practices and to keep the answers.

It sits between two neighbours on this site: supply chain emissions software, which collects suppliers’ greenhouse gas figures, and supply chain risk management software, which screens suppliers for risk.

The programme software holds the questionnaires, the ratings, the audits and the corrective actions in one place.

Its value depends less on features than on whether each result keeps its date, its scheme and its limits.

  1. 1

    Segment

Group suppliers by spend, country, commodity and risk, so the ask fits the supplier.

  2. 2

    Ask

Send questionnaires, request ratings and audits, within any limit that applies to the request.

  3. 3

    Score

Hold each result with its date, scheme and validity, without turning it into a pass mark it is not.

  4. 4

    Act

Track corrective actions to closure, with an owner and evidence.

  5. 5

    Report

Feed the modern slavery statement, customer requests and, where they apply, EU due-diligence duties.

What UK law requires

Does UK law require any of this? A statement, not a scheme

The one UK statutory duty that reaches most supplier programmes is section 54 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015.

It requires a slavery and human trafficking statement each financial year from a commercial organisation with total turnover of £36 million or more, a figure set by SI 2015/1833 that counts subsidiaries’ turnover too.

Due diligence is one of the topics a statement “may” cover, so the law asks for a statement, not a programme of any particular shape.

The Home Office’s statutory guidance treats audits as one due-diligence tool, warns that they can be deceived, and says they should not be relied upon alone.

Read the detailed guidance and references

No UK law requires a SMETA audit or an EcoVadis rating; both are asked for by buyers, which is why the software that handles them is a commercial purchase, not a compliance one.

Statement duties line by line are on modern slavery reporting requirements, and tooling for the statement itself on modern slavery reporting software.

Central government buyers also weigh supplier practice through social value: outcome 4 of the PPN 002 model is sustainable procurement practices.

Most buyer programmes run on two schemes, and each publishes its own rules, which is what a platform should follow when it stores a result.

EcoVadis says in its methodology that it scores a company’s sustainability management system from 0 to 100 in four themes — Environment, Labor & Human Rights, Ethics and Sustainable Procurement — with five levels from Insufficient to Outstanding, and that a scorecard is valid for 12 months.

Sedex runs a Self-Assessment Questionnaire tailored to industry, size and country, and owns the SMETA on-site audit, which it says is not a certification and not pass/fail.

EcoVadis says a supplier normally pays for its rating, with fees “never contingent on the rating result”, and that a recent SMETA audit will generally spare a supplier an EcoVadis site verification.

What a request may require

How much can a buyer ask a small supplier? For CSRD, a cap

For groups in CSRD scope, EU law now limits what they may require of smaller suppliers for their own reporting.

The value-chain cap, inserted into the Accounting Directive by Directive (EU) 2026/470, protects undertakings averaging 1,000 employees or fewer: a CSRD reporter may not require more than the content of the EU voluntary standard for them.

The cap applies only to information gathered for CSRD reporting, and it does not stop a supplier sharing more if it chooses.

The checker beside this tells you, from two answers, whether a request falls under it.

Due diligence duties

Which due-diligence laws reach a UK supplier? Mostly through EU customers

The heavier due-diligence regimes are European, and they reach UK suppliers through the customers they bind.

The CSDDD now covers companies with more than 5,000 employees and €1.5bn turnover, and member states apply it from 26 July 2029.

The EUDR places due diligence on the operator that first places a relevant product on the EU market, so a supplier’s evidence matters to a customer selling into the EU.

In Great Britain, deforestation due diligence remains a proposal, and the CMA’s January 2026 guidance says liability for a green claim can run along the whole supply chain.

Frequently asked

Supply chain sustainability software, answered

What is supply chain sustainability software?

Software that runs a buyer’s supplier sustainability programme: sending questionnaires, collecting ratings and audit results, tracking corrective actions, and holding the evidence for due diligence and reporting.

Some products also collect suppliers’ emissions, which has its own page on this site.

Does UK law require supplier sustainability software?

No. Section 54 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 requires a slavery and human trafficking statement from a commercial organisation with £36 million or more total turnover, including subsidiaries, and lists due diligence among the topics it may include.

No law names a tool.

Does UK law require an EcoVadis rating or a SMETA audit?

No. The Home Office’s statutory guidance treats audits as one due-diligence tool that should not be relied upon alone, and names no audit scheme or rating provider.

Buyers ask for them as a commercial choice.

How does an EcoVadis rating work?

EcoVadis says it scores a company’s sustainability management system from 0 to 100, overall and in four themes — Environment, Labor & Human Rights, Ethics and Sustainable Procurement — across 21 criteria, under methodology V10.0 from January 2026.

A scorecard is valid for 12 months.

Who pays for an EcoVadis rating?

Normally the rated supplier.

EcoVadis says the questionnaire cannot be submitted without a subscription, priced by employee band, region, term and plan, and that fees are never contingent on the rating result.

A buyer pays the first year only where its own contract with EcoVadis says so.

What is Sedex, and what does it cost?

Sedex is a paid membership platform where suppliers complete a Self-Assessment Questionnaire and share audits with linked customers.

It publishes supplier plans at £224 per site (Standard) and £374 per site (Supplier Plus), billed annually.

Is SMETA a certification?

No. Sedex says SMETA is an audit methodology, not a certification and not pass/fail.

Every audit covers labour standards and health and safety; a four-pillar audit adds environment and business ethics.

The output is a report with a corrective action plan.

How long is a SMETA audit valid?

Sedex says there is no official expiration period, but since June 2025 it no longer accepts a SMETA audit as a robust assessment of current workplace conditions after 24 months.

What is the CSRD value-chain cap?

An EU rule that stops a company in CSRD scope from requiring an undertaking in its value chain with 1,000 employees or fewer to provide more than the content of the EU voluntary standard for such undertakings, for CSRD reporting. It does not reach requests made for other purposes.

Does CSDDD apply to UK suppliers?

CSDDD falls on companies with more than 5,000 employees and €1.5bn turnover (or €1.5bn turnover in the EU for third-country companies), and member states apply it from 26 July 2029.

A UK supplier is reached through its EU customers’ due diligence, not directly.

Will UK ESG ratings regulation cover supplier ratings?

The UK order (SI 2025/1349) bites on 29 June 2028 and has no carve-out for supplier ratings by name; a rating is in scope if it is likely to influence an investment decision.

No text yet decides where any supplier rating falls.

Has this site tested any supply chain sustainability software?

No. The tests on this page are written from the law and from each scheme’s own published rules, and the vendor list quotes each vendor’s own description of itself, alphabetically.
