Sustainability management software: run the year, not just the report
Sustainability management software runs the work behind a sustainability programme between one report and the next.
That means environmental and energy management systems, targets and actions, supplier data and the evidence for each.
For the disclosure end, see sustainability reporting software; for the wider category, see sustainability software.
What it runs
What does sustainability management software actually manage?
Most products cover five jobs, and few do all five equally well.
| Job | What the software holds | UK anchor |
|---|---|---|
| Environmental management | Aspects and legal registers, objectives, internal audits, nonconformities | ISO 14001:2026 |
| Energy management | Energy review, significant energy uses, performance indicators, baselines | ISO 50001 |
| Carbon | Scope 1, 2 and 3 inventory and the factor set behind it | GHG Protocol |
| Targets and actions | Targets, actions, owners, budgets and progress | Company choice |
| Suppliers | Questionnaires, evidence, risk flags | Company choice |
UK duties
Which UK duties should sustainability management software support?
ESOS: in Phase 4 the only compliance routes are an ESOS energy audit or ISO 50001, so an energy management module that supports ISO 50001 is directly useful (SI 2026/701).
SECR: an unquoted company reports only when it exceeds two of £36m turnover, £18m balance sheet and 250 employees (Sch 7 ¶20B).
UK SRS: listed companies in UKLR 6, 14, 15, 16 and 22 report on a comply-or-explain basis for periods beginning on or after 1 January 2027 (FCA PS26/19).
A management tool that feeds these from one dataset saves the most work; see ESOS software, SECR software and UK SRS reporting software.
Badges
Is any sustainability management software certified?
ISO certifies no software: an ISO 14001 or ISO 50001 certificate is issued to an organisation’s management system by a certification body.
GRI licenses software that uses its Standards and CDP accredits solutions providers, but each list covers that framework only (GRI; CDP).
The GHG Protocol’s Built on GHG Protocol review service is closed until further notice (GHG Protocol).
The CMA says liability for a misleading green claim can run along the whole supply chain, so a tool that publishes supplier claims should keep the evidence behind each one (CMA).
Questions buyers ask
Which sustainability management software is best, and which has the best support?
This site does not rank vendors or rate their support, because no neutral test of either exists.
A fair comparison runs the same real data through each shortlisted tool and checks five things: coverage of your duties, traceability, evidence, exports and exit terms.
Use the ESG software comparison method and, for small firms, carbon accounting for small businesses.
The demonstration
What should you test before buying?
Ask the vendor to run one site through a full year, using your own data.
Software demo · evidence check
Sustainability management demo coverage
Tick a test only when the vendor has demonstrated it with a representative record and shown the evidence or export.
0 of 5 tests demonstrated (0%). This is a checklist result, not a score for the vendor.
Still to test: Record an environmental aspect, an objective and an internal audit finding; Track an energy performance indicator against its baseline; Produce Scope 1 and 2 with the conversion factor set named; Assign an action, an owner and a deadline, and show progress; Export every record and its evidence in an open format.
Frequently asked
Sustainability management software, answered
What is sustainability management software?
Software that runs the day-to-day work behind a company’s sustainability programme: environmental and energy management systems, targets and actions, supplier data, evidence and reports.
Is sustainability management software the same as sustainability reporting software?
No. Reporting software produces a disclosure for a period.
Management software runs the year: owners, actions, audits, targets and evidence.
Many products do both.
Is any sustainability management software certified?
ISO certifies no software: ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 certificates are issued to an organisation’s management system by a certification body.
GRI and CDP publish partner lists for their own frameworks only.
What sustainability compliance software do experts recommend for large corporations?
There is no neutral ranking.
A large UK company should shortlist on the duties it actually has, such as SECR, ESOS and UK SRS, and test each tool with its own data.
