Energy software: nine kinds, and the UK duties behind them

Energy software is any tool that collects, checks, analyses or reports an organisation’s energy use.

It comes in nine kinds, from meter monitoring to ESOS audits and building EPCs, and the UK duty you carry decides which you need first.

For what an energy management system must hold, see energy management software.

What does a 30-store retailer need? A labelled case

Corner Larder Ltd is an illustrative unquoted food retailer with 30 stores, 600 staff and £120 million turnover.

It qualifies for ESOS, reports under SECR and sub-lets two units, so three duties draw on the same meters.

Its weak point is estimated bills, so the first purchase is bill management and monitoring, not an audit tool.

Frequently asked

Energy software, answered

What is energy software?

Any software that collects, checks, analyses or reports an organisation’s energy use: monitoring meters, validating bills, running audits, managing buildings and producing the energy lines UK reports ask for.

What is the difference between energy software and energy management software?

Energy management software is one kind of energy software: the system that runs an energy management programme, often to ISO 50001.

Energy software also includes bill validation, audit tools, building energy tools and reporting tools.

What is the best energy software?

This site has tested no product and names no best.

Start from your duties — ESOS, SECR, MEES — and the data you hold, then test a shortlist on one real site.

Do I need energy software for ESOS?

Not by law.

ESOS asks a qualifying organisation for an energy audit or ISO 50001 certification by the compliance date, 5 December 2027 in Phase 4.

Software helps gather the twelve months of data an assessor needs.

Who has to do ESOS?

A UK undertaking with at least 250 persons, or annual turnover over £44 million and a balance sheet over £38 million, and any group it belongs to.

The Phase 4 qualification date is 31 December 2026.

Does SECR need energy software?

SECR asks for energy in kWh and emissions in the directors’ report.

A company that used 40,000 kWh or less may say so instead; above that, software helps when sites and fuels multiply.

What energy software do landlords need?

For non-domestic MEES in England and Wales, a record of each let property’s EPC, its rating and when it was lodged: an EPC is valid for MEES if lodged no more than 10 years before it is relied on.

Is CRC software still needed?

No. The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme was revoked from 1 October 2018.

How many vendors say they support ESOS?

3 of the 73 vendors in this site’s registry describe ESOS on their own pages, and 17 describe SECR.

A missing claim is a question for the vendor, not a finding.

What does energy reporting cost?

DESNZ measured a mean ongoing SECR compliance cost of £7,100 a year per complier and about 94 hours of staff time.

Energy software is one way to spend those hours differently.

Has this site tested any energy software?

No. This page maps kinds of software to UK duties cited to their provisions; vendor claims are quoted in their own words.
